East AfricaCOM 2008

Cable Congress
Okura Hotel, Amsterdam
April 23-25, Madrid 2008
www.cablecongress.com
ECCA (European Cable Communications Association) has changed its name to Cable Europe (www.cable-europe.eu) and its annual event has been re-branded Cable Congress. Assuming the conference itself does not change radically, you should expect this to be one of the most informative television conferences of the year if you are interested in European cable. The event has a 'cable club’ feel, with some of Europe’s leading cable operators always willing to discuss their ambitions and fears in detail. Previous events have included valuable break-out sessions looking into specific areas of the cable business, like marketing. The main theme of last year’s event was how cable could win the battle for the digital home.
India & South AsiaCOM 2008
23-24 April - Mumbai, India
3GSM
Fira de Barcelona, Barcelona
February 9-12, 2008
www.3gsmworldcongress.com
Three years ago there were few television executives who would have put 3GSM on their must-attend exhibition list, but that is changing fast thanks to the advent of mobile TV, a service category that until 2006 was almost exclusively delivered over 2.5G or 3G networks. Mobile television sits right between the mobile telecoms and broadcast/entertainment industries and just as IBC delivers a broadcast/television centric mobile TV experience with its ‘Mobile Zone’ and other exhibits, 3GSM provides a cellular-led experience. Mobile TV is only one interest at 3GSM however; there were 1,300 exhibitors and 57,000 visitors in 2006.
SATELLITE 2008
Washington Convention Center, Washington D.C.
February 15-28, 2008
www.satellite2008.com
A major satellite communications event with relevance to most television networks or broadcasters relying on satellite for content contribution, distribution or direct-to-home transmission. The organisers say they are looking at how "today's satellite transmission services are no longer a matter of mere global transmissions but rather an evolution of strategic relationships with complementary service providers."
The Connected Home
Olympia, London
March 14, 2008
www.the-connected-home.co.uk
This is the fourth annual outing for Europe's largest specialist show focusing on the connected and converged customer premise and this year it will be co-located with IPTV World Forum, the world’s leading IPTV exhibition and conference. In 2007 The Connected Home is expanding its focus to keep pace with the growth in portable media that is delivered off the Internet or Pay TV networks using the digital home as a storage repository and hub for re-distribution. Leading worldwide satellite, cable, telco and mobile operators will discuss their vision of the connected home, and how it relates to their industries, and there will be a showcase area that outlines future home and connected home scenarios from the perspective of operators. The organisers are expecting over 500 attendees.
IPTV World Forum 2008
Olympia, London
March 12-14, 2008
www.iptv-forum.com
Over 2,000 people attended this event last year and the organisers are predicting 5,000 this time around, with significant growth predicted for the exhibition too, from 80 companies to 200. The conference/exhibition is focused on IPTV in all its forms, addressing the business, deployment and technology issues of alternative broadband providers, incumbent and competitive telcos, and even satellite operators looking to harness broadband IP networks to create triple-play services or introduce VOD. In 2007 the conference will extend this focus to television delivered direct-to-home over the public Internet, with the addition of the TV-over-Net conference. IPTV World Forum is also co-located with The Connected Home conference/exhibition, taking into account the obvious inter-dependence of IPTV and the customer premise experience. Over 30 telcos and ISPs will be speaking in 2007, plus leading content owners and broadcasters. There is also a showcase area demonstrating the services of 25 of the world’s leading IPTV providers.
CABSAT 2007
Dubai International Convention & Exhibition Center
March 6-8, 2007
www.cabsat.com
This is probably the leading cable, satellite and broadcasting event focused on the Gulf states and has traditionally attracted a good quality audience from this region. The organisers bill it as "an annual showcase for the latest developments in the electronic media and communications industry. Last year's show was endorsed by the Arab States Broadcasting Union, Asia Pacific Broadcasting Union and IABM (International Association of Broadcasting Manufacturers). Organised by Dubai World Trade Centre (DWTC), its full name is the Middle East International Cable, Satellite, Broadcast & Communications Exhibition. This will be the 13th event.
TV-over-Net
March 12, 2008
www.iptv-forum.com
This one-day conference is co-located with IPTV World Forum, providing the opportunity for a valuable one-stop visit for anyone interested in IPTV and television-over-IP in its more general sense. TV-over-Net recognises the growing importance of Internet TV and assesses the market for video content delivered off the public Internet and the potential threats and opportunities for the existing Pay TV and free-to-air marketplace. This is a valuable addition to the conference calendar.
NAB 2007
Las Vegas Convention Center, Las Vegas
April 11-17, 2008
www.nabshow.com
This is the most important of the three for most television technology professionals, the exhibition having evolved considerably beyond broadcast and satellite-for-broadcast to cover most platform types including, increasingly, IPTV and mobile TV. Some cable technology is even there too. On-demand services, customer premise equipment and silicon make up the mix alongside content contribution, playout, distribution, acquisition, transport and transmission technologies, plus of course the entire studio and facilities (post-production etc) segments that we, as a magazine, do not cover. This is one of the shows where major vendors make major announcements.
IPTV World Forum North America
Awaiting publication of dates and venue
www.iptv-northamerica.com
This is the latest addition to the IPTV World Series of events that includes IPTV World Forum, IPTV World Forum Eastern Europe and IPTV World Forum Asia (among others).
The Cable Show
Mandalay Bay Convention Center, Las Vegas
May 18-20, 2008
www.thecableshow.com
Previously called The National Show and often referred to as NCTA after its organisers (National Cable & Telecommunications Association), this is one of the two major cable shows in the US each year (alongside SCTE's Cable-Tec Expo) and the less techy of the two. Given the size of the US cable industry it is also one of the world's most important cable events by default. The organisers say The Cable Show is about broadband ("a bold new world of multimedia applications that ride the cable pipe"), VoiP, video games, mobile content and of course, good old television. "The Cable Show is the one-stop showcase where breakthrough technologies are on display and top executives are on the scene," the organisers declare.
IPTV World Forum Eastern Europe
2008
Prague
www.iptv-easterneurope.com
Eastern Europe is a strong potential market for IPTV given its relatively low digital TV and Pay TV penetration combined with rapid economic growth. IPTV World Forum Eastern Europe made its debut in Budapest in 2006 with a compelling conference and complementary exhibition that attracted visitors from across the region. That event emphasised that East Europe is a market very distinct from Western Europe, with its own dynamics and business and technology challenges. The 2007 event will, once again, focus on the interests of Eastern European service providers.
ANGA Cable
May 27-29, 2008
www.angacable.de
ANGA Cable has evolved beyond a domestic German show into a pan-European gathering for cable TV, fulfilling a much-needed role for a cable-centric exhibition and conference on the continent. In 2006 there were 308 exhibitors from 28 countries and 9,400 visitors (up 20 per cent on 2005). All aspects of the cable industry are covered from transport and distribution, to headend and transmission network components, through to customer premise equipment.
Digital Radio Show & Mobile TV World Forum
Olympia, London
2008
www.digital-radio-show.com
This is possibly Europe’s leading Digital Radio event, focused on the digital medium and looking this year at the implications of visually-enhanced radio, the impact of digital radio as part of mobile TV offerings, and the increasing interactivity of radio (including the availability of time-shifting). Key European radio broadcasters will be speaking and there is a 20 company exhibition to complement the high-level conference sessions. This year the event is being co-located with the Mobile TV World Forum, drawing on the natural synergies of digital radio and mobile TV (such as the ability to use the same DAB networks).
www.mobiletv-forum.com

BroadcastAsia
June 19-22, 2008
www.broadcast-asia.com
The organisers describe this show as "Asia’s most successful broadcasting and digital multimedia technology event" and say it has been chosen as the sales and marketing platform for industry leaders with an Asia-Pacific market focus. There is a full conference alongside the exhibition and the event is co-located with ComGraphics&Animation, CommunicAsia and DME. There were 17,000 attendees at last year's show.
IFA 2007
Messe Berlin, Berlin
August 31 to September 5, 2007
www.ifa-berlin.de
The organisers say this is the largest Consumer Electronics trade fair in the world. In 2005 it had 1,202 exhibitors from 40 countries and nearly 246,000 visitors.
IBC
RAI Centre, Amsterdam
September 6-11, 2007
www.ibc.org
Without doubt, the premier television technology exhibition in Europe – and perhaps the world. This is one of the ‘Majors’ where the world’s leading vendors and service providers introduce and demonstrate new products. Only NAB and, to a lesser extent The Cable Show (previously The National Show) seem to generate as many genuine product launches in the television space. The exhibition is focused on the broadcast, satellite and cable markets (probably in that order) with an increasing volume of IPTV and mobile TV. The ‘Mobile Zone’, introduced in 2005 and dramatically larger in 2006, is a valuable addition. There is a major conference programme alongside the exhibition.

Last year’s dates: Sept 27-29, Shanghai
www.iptv-asia.net
Asia’s leading IPTV event made its debut in Hong Kong in 2005 and moved to Shanghai in 2006, providing a high-level conference focused on IPTV and specifically, IPTV in the Asia-Pacific marketplace. The 2006 Asia event included representatives from China Netcom, SMG (Shanghai Media Group), Shanghai Telecom (China Telecom), NTT, City Telecom, MiTV and True. They were joined by leading content providers and broadcasters. IPTV World Forum Asia is a three day conference with a full exhibition.
