Harmonic Inc. is offering cable operators the ability to segment cable
nodes - and thus increase bandwidth per subscriber - without the need
to deploy additional fibre. The company has just introduced 1310 nm
Dense Wave Division Multiplexing (DWDM) forward path transmitters to
its PWRLink transmitter family and these allow operators to combine up
to eight wavelengths to deliver traffic to segmented nodes.

Inuk Networks and Packet Vision claim first ever targeted IPTV advert campaign
Inuk Networks and Packet Vision have delivered what they claim is the
world’s first targeted TV advertising campaign to a pre-defined
audience, replacing a national advert with a different commercial for
consumers watching Inuk’s student-centric Freewire IPTV service. The
advertising campaign, featuring a Mediacom financial client, ran daily
on Channel 4 (one of the UK’s most popular channels) during October
16-31.

Mobile TV security solutions support BCAST and OSF co-existence
Two important solutions are being showcased at Mobile World Congress
that support the co-existence of the OMA BCAST and DVB-IPDC OSF content
security standards. In one, Silicon & Software Systems (S3) has
integrated Irdeto’s OSF and BCAST security components into its onHandTV
mobile TV client. The second sees NDS offering a single mobile TV
platform that can deliver encrypted streams conforming to both security
formats.

Live DVB-SH signals re-transmitted around Mobile World Congress
Delegates at the Mobile World Congress exhibition in Barcelona
(starting February 11th) will be able to see a demonstration of live
mobile TV using DVB-SH, the DVB-H-based specification that harnesses
S-band spectrum (2.2GHz) instead of UHF. DVB-SH can be used for
broadcast TV services delivered to handhelds via satellite, or hybrid
systems that combine satellite delivery with terrestrial S-band
transmission. It is viewed as a viable alternative or complement to
DVB-H.

Digital TV Group emphasises concerns about UK HDTV
The DTG (Digital TV Group), the industry association for digital TV in
the UK, believes the UK regulator’s proposals for the future of HDTV
over digital terrestrial are fundamentally flawed. Dermot Nolan, the
new Director General at the DTG, believes the current Ofcom plans have
the potential to seriously compromise the Freeview DTT platform and has
suggested there should be a comprehensive national strategy for HD
encompassing all TV platforms to ensure that the UK does not end up
with first and second class HDTV services.

SK Telecom and SanDisk aim for mobile TV PVR and super-distribution
SK Telecom and flash memory specialist SanDisk Corporation are offering
a vision of the mobile TV future in Barcelona this week with
demonstrations of a mobile platform that enables PVR recording on
handhelds, plus porting of content from one device to another. The
technology has been jointly developed by the companies and is based
around OMA DRM 2.0 compliant DRM and services, TrustedFlash security
technology and secure mobile storage solutions from SanDisk.

Dolby demonstrates its surround sound experience for mobile TV
Mobile phones are getting the Dolby surround sound treatment now, in a
move that confirms the belief that handhelds are a viable playout
device for 'serious' television viewing. The company is using this
week's Mobile World Congress in Barcelona to demonstrate Dolby Mobile,
an audio processing technology platform that it says brings "rich,
vibrant surround sound to music, movies and television programmes on
mobile phones and portable media players".

Widevine protects Flash streaming video for Warner Bros in Latin America
Merlin Interactive, the digital media systems integrator working in
Latin America, is using Widevine Technologies content protection to
ensure the integrity of Flash-based streaming video from Warner Bros.
Consumers in the region can log onto WBLA.com to watch shows like
'Gossip Girl' in the days after its original broadcast. They can stream
entire episodes in secure Flash either to a PC or Mac. Widevine
emphasises that its Internet video security solution supports all
formats, browsers and operating systems.

Worries about whether UK digital terrestrial can cope with HDTV
The BBC officially launched its HDTV
channel (BBC HD) in the UK on December 1, carried on BSkyB's satellite
platform and by cable operator Virgin Media. The channel will also be
available on the new Freesat free-to-air satellite platform, a joint
venture between the BBC and ITV, that is scheduled to launch in the
spring. Although BBC HD has been available as a preview channel, it is
officially the 12th linear channel available in the UK (the other 11

Nagravision and Gemalto claim world first OMA BCAST compliance
Nagravision and Gemalto have successfully demonstrated interoperability
between headend equipment and a mobile TV card in full compliance with
the OMA BCAST SCP 1.0 specifications. The companies claim this is a
world first. Nagravision’s OMA BCAST SmartCard Profile headend solution
is available today and Gemalto’s will be available in the early part of
this year, “providing all the functions needed to protect broadcasted
services and content”.

Microsoft shows TV social networking; announces multi-room DVR support
IPTV providers using the Microsoft Mediaroom service delivery platform
can now offer their subscribers multi-room DVR capability, allowing
them to watch recorded programmes on any television in the home.
Microsoft Corporation says its DVR Anywhere feature is the first
whole-home DVR offering available to IPTV operators. The solution is
software-based so no TV tuners are needed, and it requires that only
one set-top box features a hard drive. It supports SD or HDTV services.

Vodafone Italia to offer free mobile TV content, supported by targeted ads
Amobee Media Systems has been selected by Vodafone Italia to offer
ad-funded mobile video content to the operator’s 29.1 million Italian
customers. The service, called FreeVideo, allows Vodafone Italia 3G
(UMTS) users to access a wide range of high-quality, local and branded
video content free, in return for receiving relevant commercial
messages from major brands.

Imagine Communications promises cable operators 50pc more video
Imagine Communications has announced the availability of its first -
and long anticipated - product, which re-processes compressed MPEG-2
digital signals, then statistically multiplexes them for Multiple
Programme Transport Stream (MPTS) digital broadcast over cable. The
company claims the new ICE Broadcast System will enable up to 50 per
cent more HDTV or SD throughput on cable plant while maintaining
excellent video quality, and says this bandwidth harnessing potential
is more cost-effective than Switched Digital Video.

Korea’s C&M pioneers MEPG-4 HDTV on cable with Harmonic Electra 7000
Korean cable operator C&M Co., Ltd, which boasts more than two
million subscribers, has deployed Harmonic Inc.’s DiviCom Electra 7000
encoder for what is thought to be Asia's first live, high-definition
MPEG-4 AVC (H.264) video service in a cable environment.

One Cisco/SA gateway to manage Pay TV and Internet services
Cisco/Scientific Atlanta is looking to accelerate in-home convergence
with an IP-based gateway that will take content off privately managed
Pay TV networks and the open Internet, then ship it to the appropriate
devices using a variety of networking technologies. The company says
its IP Services Gateway (Model DRG2800) is designed to bring
network-based and home-based applications together in one device. The
DRG2800 was unveiled at CES earlier this month.

Viasat entrusts Pace with launch of satellite HD PVR services
Viasat Broadcasting has selected Pace Micro Technology as the launch
partner for its high-definition PVR service on digital satellite. The
operator will deploy the Pace TDS850NV - a dual tuner HD PVR with
MPEG-4 AVC (H.264) decoding and DVB-S2 demodulation - to households
across the Nordic countries. The decoder features NDS middleware and
content security.

IMS Research: Telco TV emerging as true multi-play competitor
IMS Research is forecasting that there will be over 52 million Pay
TV IPTV subscribers worldwide by 2012, with IP set-top box shipments
growing nearly 30 per cent annually during this period. The company
estimates that 6 million IP-enabled set-top boxes shipped worldwide in
2007 across IPTV, cable and satellite platforms. The statistics are
found in the research group’s latest study, ‘IPTV: A Global Market
Analysis - 2008 Edition’.

Mobile TV will reach 462 million subscribers by 2012, says ABI
ABI Research is predicting 462 million mobile TV subscribers worldwide
by 2012, with Japan, South Korea, China and India contributing
significantly to the total. The growth is explained by the expansion of
3G networks and flat-rate plans for mobile video, the build-out of
mobile video delivery networks and an increase in the amount of
available content.

IPTV market has doubled in a year to 10.6 million homes, says InformaInforma Telecoms & Media is predicting 38.4 million IPTV homes by 2012 worldwide, seven times the end-2006 figure, but points out that this will amount to only 3.1 per cent of the world’s TV households. In 2006, IPTV generated revenues from subscriptions and VOD of less than US$1.5 billion worldwide. By 2012 this figure is forecast to reach US$14.7 billion, with US$13.6 billion coming from subscription revenues, and a further US$1.1 billion from VOD revenues. |
