IP-PRIME reveals fruits of NDS Metro middleware integration

SES AMERICOM and NDS have been showing US telcos the rich IPTV user experience that is now available to them as part of the IP PRIME service, which covers the distribution of MPEG-4 AVC content into headends and - as part of a fully managed solution - can also take care of set-top box management including software, EPG, subscriber management, and remote management and control for the headend systems.

GTV harnesses Eutelsat’s African beam for new DTH platform

Gateway Broadcast Services, which is deploying a new satellite Pay TV platform that will cover 48 sub-Saharan countries in Africa, has signed a five year agreement with Eutelsat for Ku-band capacity on the African beam of the company’s W3A satellite. This will deliver DTH television to homes using 90cm dishes.

Envivio offers entry-level encoder for 2.5G, 3G and 3.5G mobile TV

Mobile TV operators using 2.5G, 3G and 3.5G are being promised affordable encoding thanks to the new 4Caster M4 mobile TV encoder from Envivio, launched in June but already available for 3G video applications. The entry-level device encodes in H.263 and MPEG-4 AVC (H.264) and is compliant with 3GPP and 3GPP2.

BigBand Networks increases splicing and rate shaping capacity on BMR

The Broadband Multimedia-Service Router (BMR) video networking platform from BigBand Networks Inc. has been upgraded with some significant results, including a doubling of splicing density to enable simultaneous splicing of 200 SD streams or 50 HD streams in a single chassis. BigBand says video quality has been improved while the company appears to have introduced yet another term to the digital video dictionary: QualityShaping.

Amino unveils HD-DVR for IPTV, with proven IntAct client software

Amino has announced its new HD-DVR (Digital Video Recorder), an MPEG-4 AVC capable, single-chip set-top box that uses the company's proven IntAct IPTV client software platform. The AmiNET530 - aimed at IPTV operators - was released at NXTcomm in June. The company views it as a fundamental component of a service provider's multi-play strategy, with VOD and gaming also supported.

200 channel, end-to-end IPTV platform ecosystem targets Tier-2 and Tier-3 telcos

DigiSoft.tv, Verimatrix, GoBackTV and CSI Digital have teamed up to provide what they claim is a cost-effective and highly scalable end-to-end IPTV solution for IP network operators in the US. The package includes over 200 TV channels.

BBC added to list of companies using thePlatform to go online

BBC Global News will use thePlatform's media management and publishing system to distribute short-form video content to YouTube, it was announced in June. The content producer will publish up to 30 news clips per day, with up-to-the-minute news and analysis from around the world. A dedicated channel has been created on YouTube.

EGT highlights flexibility of dual-codec IP-based headend

EGT, the Atlanta-based video headend vendor, has launched a multi-channel, multi-format IP-based video headend for cable and IPTV operators, claiming the  product is the “only carrier-grade, high capacity video encoding solution to offer optional Digital Program Insertion (DPI), Variable Bit Rate (VBR) and Pro-MPEG Forward Error Correction (FEC).

Brix Networks adds real-time video monitoring for IPTV and cable

Brix Networks has introduced live monitoring capabilities for its BrixVision IPTV portfolio so network operators (including cable companies) can continuously monitor live broadcast video streams - and safeguard content quality in real-time.  The Massachusetts-based company says BrixVision Live Monitoring provides 24x7, in-network visibility into service quality by monitoring and analysing live streams at critical service demarcation points within the delivery network, such as headends, regional hubs and local video serving offices.

Mobile TV World Forum 2007 report: pause for thought

The market for broadcast mobile TV has gone off the boil this year but is expected to emerge again during 2008. That was the general conclusion from this year's Mobile TV World Forum conference and exhibition in London during June, where a lack of overwhelming demand for TV on 3G networks, improved and potential 3G technologies like HSDPA (High-Speed Downlink Packet Access) and MBMS (Multimedia Broadcast Multicast Service), continued spectrum scarcity and the cost of broadcast mobile handsets were given as reasons for the current lull in broadcast mobile activity.

VOD a ‘must have’ as Ovum predicts half telco costs will be content and marketing related

Video on Demand (VOD) revenues will reach $12.7 billion worldwide in 2011, making it one of the fastest-growing digital content services over the forecast period, according to Ovum, the analyst and consulting company. Starting from a base of $2.7 billion in 2007, Ovum expects to see more telcos across the globe launching their on-demand content propositions, moving themselves into content distribution.

Cable operators spoilt for choice with new dense, universal edge-QAMs

The edge-QAM has become a key battleground among cable edge and access network equipment vendors as the industry seeks to drive down the cost of downstream video and converge multiple services through the same devices. Harmonic demonstrates DOCSIS bypass approach to cable IPTV

Harmonic Inc. has been demonstrating IPTV over cable HFC, using a DOCSIS-bypass type approach to deliver VOD from a video server to a PC. Yoav Derazon, Senior Manager, Cable Solution and Strategy for the company, says the target consumer device could be any IPTV capable receiver including a set-top box or mobile player.

Standardisation of FLO continues with TIA Transport Specification

The Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA) has approved the Forward Link Only (FLO) Transport Specification as part of the continuing standardisation of the MediaFLO-based technology ecosystem. The standard specifies the framing formats and procedures for the delivery of application service packets securely over the FLO Air Interface.

Portuguese DVB-H trial uses Thomson service platform and headend products

TVI Portugal and Vodafone Portugal have completed successful trials of digital television broadcasts to mobile phones using Thomson’s SmartVision interactive service platforms and mobile TV headend products (the Argos mobile TV encoders and Opal DVB-H IP encapsulators).

Content security specialist Viaccess appoints new CEO

Viaccess, the France Telecom subsidiary that provides television content security solutions (CA and DRM) has announced the departure of Mathias Hautefort and the appointment of François Moreau de Saint Martin as its Chief Executive Officer. Saint Martin has been the CTO of the Content Division of France Telecom for three years and had been working in the area of multimedia and content.

Pace highlights channel bonding and SDV capabilities at Cable Tec Expo

Set-top box specialist Pace Micro Technology will be demonstrating the delivery of five HDTV streams over channel-bonded DOCSIS 2.0 at Cable Tec Expo next week. BigBand Networks Inc. has been highlighting its viewership and performance analysis application - Switched Video Analysis (SVA) - that is designed to allow television service providers to improve the efficiency of their networks. The solution is particularly useful for cable operators introducing Switched Digital Video as it monitors viewing behaviour, helping companies decide which channels should be switched or left as 'pure' broadcast.

Invest in M-CMTS and DOCSIS 3.0 or lose out, European cable is warned

Cable operators that do not adopt M-CMTS and DOCSIS 3.0 technologies will increasingly be squeezed into a corner by competing telcos and broadcasters, according to a new report by Analysys. The telecoms, IT and media research/ consulting firm says the cable industry cannot afford to become complacent and must move quickly to invest in new infrastructure.

LIWEST deploys BigBand’s CMTS with eyes on M-CMTS and cable IPTV

Austria’s second largest cable operator, LIWEST Kabelmedien GmbH, has deployed BigBand Network’s Cuda CMTS for its high-speed data and voice services for subscribers near the city of Linz. The system will be used as a ‘traditional’ integrated CMTS (I-CMTS) initially but there is a clear migration strategy towards modular CMTS (M-CMTS). LIWEST Kabelmedien has been testing M-CMTS since September as part of BigBand’s early access programme.

Multimedia Polska uses Latens CAS for digital cable (and IPTV)

Latens Systems’ downloadable, software-based Conditional Access has been deployed by Multimedia Polska for its cable network as it transitions from analogue to digital television. Following a highly successful trial, the smartcard-less CA is being used to protect all the Polish triple-play operator’s digital TV services. Besides services on the company’s DVB-C network, this also includes an IPTV service that was launched in Spring 2006.

Imagine Communications claims 'jaw dropping' reaction for VOD statmuxing

Imagine Communications claims the reaction to its new VBR statmuxing solution for VOD and Switched Digital Video (SDV) is "jaw dropping" among those cable operators who have seen it. The innovative solution is said to enable 50 per cent more video streams per QAM channel without a reduction in picture quality, taking the benefits of statistical multiplexing beyond broadcast television for the first time. Two major US cable operators are testing the system and all product components should be shipping by the end of this year.
